HIGGINSVILLE, Mo. (KMBC) – A Missouri community united to give a Navy veteran with no family a proper military funeral.

“Today, we are honoring a homeless veteran, John Benjamin Philpot,” Ben Ortiz Sr., a Vietnam veteran, said Thursday at the Higginsville State Veterans Cemetery.

Showing up for a stranger’s funeral can be a sacred act, especially for a veteran who had no family.

“I would want somebody to be at my funeral if I didn’t have family or people that wanted to support me for what I did in my life,” Jessica Huen, of Wellington, said.

Philpot had no home or family left, but strangers made sure the veteran was not forgotten.

“My husband actually found it on Facebook saying that there was a veteran that needed local support,” Huen added.

The service was “amazing,” according to Ortiz.

“We take this homeless veteran into our care and then we give them a full military honors service at our cost,” Ortiz said.

According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, around 30,000 veterans across the country are currently experiencing homelessness.

“It means a great deal to me to see this, to know that what we’re doing is not in vain,” Ortiz added.
